Grameenphone, commonly known as GP, is the largest mobile phone operator in Bangladesh. This pioneer mobile-phone operator started its operation on 26 March 1997. Grameen phone is owned by the two renowned companies - 'Telenor' and 'Grameen Telecom'. From its total share, Telenor owns 55.8% and Grameen Telecom owns 34.2% and the rest of shares (10%) own publicly. GP is the first and only operator in Bangladesh which covers nearly 99% country’s people with its network. Grameenphone has built the largest cellular network in the country, and it is the first company in Bangladesh in introducing GSM technology.
GP was also the first telecommunication operator in the country in introducing the pre-paid service in September 1999 as well as establishing the 24-hour Call Center. Currently, Grameenphone is providing various innovative and popular products & services to its customers such as: Telephony, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, 3G, HSPA, HSPA+ and more. At present, there are over 7 million EDGE or GPRS users in the GP network. In order to provide all outstanding services to its customers, Grameenphone bought 10 MHz of 3G (Third-generation) spectrum from BTRC in an auction, and it was commercially launched in Oct 2013. As of 14 October 2014, the total subscribers of Grameenphone are more than 50 million (5 crore).
