Bangladesh Bank is the central bank of Bangladesh. It was established on 16 December 1971. The bank is also known as reserve bank, and monetary authority institution of Bangladesh. Bangladesh Bank (BB) is a member of the Asian Clearing Union (ACU). At current, apart from the main branch, Bangladesh Bank has ten offices across the country. These offices are located at Motijheel, Sadarghat, Chittagong, Khulna, Bogra, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Barisal, Rangpur and Mymensingh. The headquarters of Bangladesh Bank is located at Motijheel in Dhaka.
The Bank has lots of functions, among them, the key functions are: acting as a government Bank, formulating and implementing of monetary and credit policies, monitoring all banks (public and private) and financial institution, administrating country's international reserves, issue currency notes, prevention of money laundering, lending money to other banks in times of need, implementing the foreign exchange regulation Act, and so on. Bangladesh Bank has the supervisory power to control all banks and other financial institutions so that they cannot behave recklessly or fraudulently.
