The Bangladesh Bar Council is a Statutory Autonomous Body of the Government established under the Bangladesh Legal Practitioners and Bar Council Order, 1972 (President’s Order No. 46 of 1972). The Council is the central body of all the advocates in the country. The Bar Council has been empowered for licensing & regularity all the Advocates of Bangladesh.
The Bar Council of Bangladesh consists of 15-member headed by the Attorney-General for Bangladesh and the Ex-Officio Chairman, Bangladesh Bar Council. The rest of members are elected by Advocates for a term of 3-year of whom seven (7) from General Seats and seven (7) from seven Zonal or Group Seats. The elected members of this council elect vice-chairman and other committees from themselves.
Bangladesh Bar Council does not offer any membership rather it is the prime body of all advocates of Bangladesh. To be an ‘Advocate’ in Bangladesh, one must have to pass in the examinations conducted by the Bangladesh Bar Council. When passed in exams, he or she will entitle as an ‘Advocate’ in the country but not as a Member of the Bar Council. Apart from admitting the persons as Advocates, the Council also promotes professional conducts and approaches for Advocates. In addition, the Bar Council of Bangladesh promotes standard legal education in the country consulting with Universities existing in Bangladesh.
In order to boost legal knowledge, Bangladesh Bar Council publishes a monthly law journal ‘Bangladesh Legal Decisions (BLD)’.
