Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) of Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh is the highest body of environment and forest departments of Bangladesh. The Ministry is enthusiastically working for planning, advancement, co-ordination and inspecting all the implementation of environmental and forestry programmes in the Country. Before 1989, Environment and Forest were two distinct departments, named Department of Environment (DoE) and Bangladesh Forest Department (BFD). From 1971 to 1989, Bangladesh Forest Department would run under the Ministry of Agriculture. During 1987-89, BDF became a Division of Agriculture Ministry. On the hand, Bangladesh Government established Department of Environment (DoE) in 1977 under the Environment Pollution Control Ordinance, 1977.
These two departments were mingled in 1989, and transferred to newly created ministry - Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF). Currently, Ministry of Environment and Forest governs the Bangladesh Forest Industries Development Corporation (BFIDC), Bangladesh National Herbarium (BNH) and Bangladesh Forest Research Institute (BFRI). MoEF is a member of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (NEC). Moreover, The Ministry also plays a vital role in the UNEP - United Nations Environment Programme.
Indeed, MoEF is the prime authority of Bangladesh for controlling, conducting, monitoring, and implementing all environmental and forest related matters. The key activities of Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) are to conserve country’s biodiversity including flora, fauna, forests and wildlife, prevent & control different types of pollutions, forest & revive the degraded areas, protect country’s environment, support to various organizations, train manpower, collect environmental information, create environmental awareness, conserve and develop forest resources, conduct research on environmental and forest related issues and more.
