Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) is an organization under the Power Division of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Government of Bangladesh (GoB). It was created on 1st May 1972 by the presidential Order No. 59. BPDB is responsible for promotion and distribution of electricity mainly in urban areas excluding Dhaka and West Zone of Bangladesh.
The Board takes many short and long term plans to produce and fulfill the demand of electricity in the country. BPDB also provides solar based power to remote areas in the country including Barkal, Juraichori, Thanchi, Dahagram, Angurpota and more. It implemented Solar Power System at Prime Minister's Office and BPDB's headquarters.
Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has taken plan to add nearly 10500 Megawatt (MW) Generation capacity in next 5-year (by 2021) to achieve 24000 MW Capacity so that all the people of Bangladesh can get the advantage of electricity.
To expand generation and distribution of electricity in the country, a number of subordinate companies are working under Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) including:
- Ashuganj Power Station Company Ltd.
- Electricity Generation Company of Bangladesh
- North West Power Generation Company Ltd
- West Zone Power Distribution Company Ltd.
